App of the Week: Luminance
Are you as tired of using Instagram as we are? Sure, it’s fun getting to edit and upload our hipster pictures, but it’s always…the same. We want more variation, and that is exactly what you get with Luminance.
Luminance is a “make your photos cool” app, like Instagram, but with a more flexible twist. Here you make the filters. Let’s back it up so we can explain a little more.
Take a photo on any Apple product, whether it is an iPhone, iPod Touch or an iPad. Then, upload it to our new favorite photography app. Like Instagram, you will be asked to select your filter, which could range from Pop to Black and White to Twilight and even Weathered, among many others. But here is where the cool part comes in: once you pick your filter, you are able to adjust it in any way you like. They call these layers. You can alter your layers by changing the white balance, exposure, brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, tone curve, split toning, vignette, colors or sepia grade. If you like what you created—great—you can save it and use it for a future photo. If you don’t, then you have the option to erase, or backtrack, discarding any layer you disagree with. So, no worries, nothing is permanent! And you can experiment with an infinite number of layers, so let your creative mind wander!
Once you are finished editing your photo, you have the option to upload it onto whatever social media platform you prefer, print it or even copy and paste it. This app is worth the $0.99 if you are interested in delving more into photo editing than simpler options like Instagram or Camera+ offer. We especially love the user-friendly interface.
