Confirmed: Jay-Z Writing “Great Gatsby” Movie Score

Baz Luhrmann’s new movie, The Great Gatsby, due for release this May, is already confirmed to have Leonardo DiCaprio as lead, and now the news has been leaked that the soundtrack will be written and produced by none other than Jay-Z. He will be working with The Bullitts, whose real name is Jeymes Samuel. Taking to Twitter to share the news, Samuel said, ”Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!” We’ll take your word for it, Mr. Samuel.

Rumors began when an early trailer for the upcoming movie was released featuring “No Church In The Wild”, Jay-Z’s 2012 track. ”New York, 1922, the tempo of the city had changed. The buildings were higher, the parties were bigger, the morales were looser, the liquor cheaper, the restless approached hysteria,” says the voiceover accompanying the theatical trailer released at the end of last year.

Spiderman star Tobey Maguire and the recently married Shame actress Carey Mulligan will also be in the film, which is being adapted from the novel by F.Scott Fitzergald.

The Great Gatsby, set in the 1920s, explores the unusual social norms of the lives of wealthy Americans. Relationships between men, women and men’s mistresses and their behavioral traits are exposed in the classic tale—a risky topic in the ’20s, which caused some controversy. Yet, the novel’s themes of jealousy, the class system and power are still just as relevant today.

Due to the fact that Luhrmann is the guy behind genius movies such as Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge, we’re confident that this latest offering is one to get excited about. And, with a soundtrack in Jay-Z’s and The Bullitts’ über-capable hands, May can’t roll around fast enough!
