Country Profile: Costa Rica

Now that summer is over, it’s certain that a lot of people are looking for a place to go that will remind them of fun times, beaches and happiness. Curious of where to go? Look no further than the wonderful country of Costa Rica.

Not only will you be able to experience and see things you’ve never seen before, but you’ll also be surrounded by the happiest people. For the year 2012, Costa Rica has been ranked the “Happiest Place on Earth” by the New Economics Foundation’s Happy Planet Index.

Places To Visit: The “ticos,” or natives, of this beautiful country live in pure happiness and bliss and want all of their visitors to feel the same way. The capital, San José, also has a lot of history and culture to offer. If you are curious to learn about this country, then this is the place to be.

Arenal is one of the main attractions offering natural wonders and adventures. The Arenal Volcano in particular offers picturesque views with its surrounding lake. Here is where you can see a local waterfall and hot springs. The hot springs are heated by the volcano and La Fortuna waterfall is also nearby, where you can swim and enjoy this natural site.

The Guanacaste Coast is another top vacation spot where you’ll experience long summer days. This is also a location for sea turtle projects where beaches are protected and monitored to help hatch the endangered sea turtles of Costa Rica.

If you wanted more of an Americanized visit, you can stay in Tamarindo, which is known for its resorts. Although this is a place for many tourists, it does not take away from the amazing beaches, food and people found here. This has become a popular spot for many spring breakers.

Things To Do: There is an endless list of activities to do and places to visit in Costa Rica. Whether you want to lay on the beach or explore jungles and volcanoes, there is sure to be something to suit every taste, budget and sense of adventure. Costa Rica offers two different coasts where you can experience tropical weather as well as mountainous and volcanic regions.

If you want to enjoy the beautiful views of Arenal Lake, you can zipline across. This also includes a sky-tram ride up into the rainforest to begin your adventure—definitely something for the adrenaline junkies out there.

Surfing is a popular hobby among natives and visitors of Costa Rica. Surfing lessons are often offered at hotels and beaches, but it’s also fun to watch the “ticos” hit the waves. Snorkeling is common among tourists because of the different species of fish found in the waters. If you want to stay on the water, sailing is going to be your best bet.

This does not even begin to cover the amazing things that Costa Rica has to offer—you really can do so much more than vacation here. Maintaining their environment is important to the “ticos” and there are many ways for you to get involved. This country has the highest biodiversity in the world and is also focused on protecting their endangered species. There are several sea turtle preservation projects with which you can also get involved.

Visiting Costa Rica can be life changing. We guarantee that the culture, atmosphere and people of this paradise will allow you to have an out-of-this-world experience.
