Details Emerge on the Star-Studded Olympics Ceremonies

Who doesn’t love a little friendly worldwide competition? We are getting very excited for the Summer 2012 Olympics, which will be hosted in London this year, and are too excited for the highly anticipated opening ceremony.

Famed filmmaker Danny Boyle, who directed mega-hits Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours, is taking his role as the ceremony’s artistic director very seriously. After reportedly spending over $42.3 million on the event, Boyle announced his inspirations came from Frankenstein, the Queen of England and James Bond. Hmm…we wonder how he will pull classic literature, royalty and the sexy 007 together? We hear he created a short film at Buckingham Palace featuring Daniel Craig as James Bond.

There are reportedly big things in the works for the Olympics’ opening and closing ceremonies. the opening ceremony alone will allegedly include acts such as Duran Duran, Snow Patrol and 12,000 other performers, including dancers, drummers, acrobats, nurses and “imitators of historically important Britons.”

Paul McCartney confirmed to BBC Radio 5 that he is now officially “closing the opening” ceremony. After his exciting performance at the Queen’s Jubilee, we are looking forward to the fab ex-Beatle’s finale. In addition, according to Vanity Fair, the closing ceremony will feature headlining acts such as The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Adele, Elton John and The Spice Girls (oh my!).

The concert behind the closing ceremony is entitled A Symphony of British Music, and is supposed to include popular artists and bands from each musical era. It has been confirmed that The Sex Pistols, who would have represented the 1970s punk movement, denied their involvement in the ceremony. According to The Times, John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) and friends snubbed the ceremony, which can be seen as just another “snub to the establishment.” Oh, you punk rockers.

This year’s Olympics theme is “The Isles of Wonder,” an homage to William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and events will be taking place at the Olympic Park in Stratford. Make sure to cheer on your country, or whoever looks cutest in their Speedos (Michael Phelps, anyone?).
