How to Wear: Pastels for Fall

Get ready for a chic and fashionable change in your typical autumn color scheme. It is time to dilute those stylish summer neon hues into simple, soft pastel shades for fall! Not only has this trend exploded on the runway, but many style icons have also been spotted sporting playful pastel pieces. Whether the pastel tones are played up through clothing, shoes or accessories, the light and calm shade can totally make an outfit. Pastels have long been a spring and summer staple, but with some restructuring the pretty palette can be transitioned into fabulous fall ensembles.
We have gathered some amazing pastel tips and items to help you out with this sometimes-difficult seasonal shift. Although we are all still trying to savor the very last sweet days of summer, why not take a stylish leap forward and prepare for the oncoming season?
Mix Pastels with Neutral Pieces
Embody the beautiful autumn scenery by incorporating pastel pieces with earthy tones. A light pastel shade pops and looks stunning when paired with a neutral. Since pastels can be a bit overwhelming, neutral shades provide a fantastic—and très fashionable—balance. Blacks, greys and browns definitely compliment sherbet tones as displayed by Diane von Furstenburg.
Color Blocking
The neon color-blocking trend was all the rage this summer, but with a small shift in color intensity, color-blocking remains a stylish outfit option for fall. You can stay safe and choose hues that are similar (think same ombre family) or be a bit daring and play with more unlikely matches. We love 3.1 Phillip Lim’s choice of pairing mint, lavender and cantaloupe. Layering is also a fun fall look that has been updated with splashes of pastel.
Accessorize
If you’re still a bit nervous about taking the pastel apparel plunge, why not freshen up a daytime or nighttime ensemble with pastel hued accessories? (Baby steps!) An ethereal colored clutch, cute pastel shoes or light-toned jewelry can add that bit of chic funkiness an otherwise-boring outfit may need.
