The How-To’s of the Ponytail

One of the more chic hairstyles to come out of New York Fashion Week is an old classic, the ponytail. The theme of this fall seems to be low maintenance, and the slicked back hairstyle is the perfect solution for those looking for minimal effort in the morning. Ponytails came in all versions: some were high and youthful like the hair at Jason Wu’s show, while others were neat and ladylike like those featured at Jil Sander’s display. Gwyneth Paltrow, who I noted in my last article here, wore a stunning Tom Ford dress to the Oscars in February, and a low, slick ponytail instead of going with the traditional swept up hairstyle worn by every other actress at the show.

To get a perfect, smooth ponytail every time, try the following steps:

First, add a heat-protecting serum to your hair before you blow dry. To get the most volume possible, blow dry with your head upside down and focus on the roots. Next, iron your hair straight by dividing your hair into sections and work from one side to the other to get an even look. Now, depending on whether or not you want a high or low ponytail, part your hair down the middle or to the side like the girls at the Marc by Marc Jacobs fashion show. Using a brush, pull back your hair, and for some extra sleekness, spray some hairspray directly on the brush before combing. After getting the desired look, use a clear elastic band to tie.
